Since 1946, on April 25th, Rome becomes the center of the youth cycling world. For the 77th time, on a date that represents a historic and heartfelt anniversary in the history of our country, the streets of the Capital will host the Gran Premio della Liberazione cycling race, internationally known as the “Spring World Championship,” which boasts a prestigious roll of honor including victories by great champions such as Gianni Bugno, Matteo Trentin, and Matthew Goss. The event will serve as a sort of appetizer for the finale of the 107th Giro d’Italia, which will conclude in Rome on May 26th with the final 122-kilometer stage that will determine the overall winner of the Corsa in Rosa.
The historic road cycling race organized by Terenzi Sport Eventi, included in the UCI and FCI calendars and supported by the Department of Sport, Major Events, Tourism and Fashion of Roma Capitale, will take place as usual on the traditional Terme di Caracalla circuit, and features a series of competitive and open races, with over 2,000 cyclists expected to participate.
From Thursday, April 25th to Saturday, April 27th five competitive races are scheduled: Thursday the 25th, the main race reserved for Under 23 (2:00 pm) and the Elite Women race (9:00 am), which this year has risen to category 1.1; Friday the 26th, at 3:00 pm, the amateurs race, the “Urbis et Orbis Cup” on a 5-kilometer course to be repeated 12 times; Saturday the 27th, the male Juniors race (9:30 am) and the male races for the Allievi (12:30 pm) and Esordienti (3:30 pm) categories.
During the three days, there will also be gymkhana and short track events for Giovanissimi, and on April 25th at 12:00 pm, the Bike4Fun will start, a free ride involving hundreds of high school students from Rome, citizens, and tourists along a route that partly follows the competitive races, touching iconic points of the Capital.
On the 26th, as a new feature of this edition, there will be a 10-kilometer running race starting at 6:30 pm from Via delle Terme di Caracalla, following the cycling race route and organized in collaboration with Appia Run.
On Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, also from April 25th to 27th, the Village will be open (free entry – from 10 am to 8 pm) where you can meet the race protagonists, visit the stands, and take part in various collateral initiatives on the themes of sustainable mobility, road safety education, the development of sport cities, cycle tourism, and urban cycling.
Marta Bastianelli, the cyclist from Lariano (Rome), world and European road champion, who retired at the end of 2023, will be at the starting line as the event’s patroness.
The 77th GP Liberazione was presented this morning at the Centrale Montemartini in Rome. The presentation was attended by Svetlana Celli, President of the Capitoline Assembly (via video), Alessandro Onorato, Councillor for Major Events, Sport, Tourism and Fashion, Cordiano Dagnoni, President of the Italian Cycling Federation, Maria Spena, Member of the Board of Sport e Salute, and Claudio Terenzi, organizer of the 77th GP Liberazione.
Alessandro Onorato (Councillor for Sport, Major Events, Tourism and Fashion of Roma Capitale) - “When we took office in the government of Roma Capitale, this event already had a great tradition. When I first met Terenzi, I launched the idea of bringing top-level cycling back to Rome, despite some skepticism. After three years, we can say we have achieved our goal by bringing the Giro d’Italia back to the Capital and relaunching the Liberazione, which is closely linked to this great two-wheel project. This event is fundamental because it gives space to young people. The route and the beauty of Rome will do the rest and will leave participants from all over the world with an indelible memory. We are sure that even in this edition we will see the champions of the future competing.”
Svetlana Celli (President of the Capitoline Assembly) - “I did not want to miss the opportunity to send my greetings for such an iconic event as the Liberazione. We will also be at the Terme di Caracalla this year on a date that is a symbol and celebration of Freedom. An event that, like others, makes Rome a pleasant place for citizens, tourists, and all sports enthusiasts.”
Edy Palazzi (Councillor, Lazio Region) - “I am here to bring greetings from the Councillor for Sport, Elena Palazzo, who is close to the organizers. The participation of the Lazio Region is important for an event that has great cultural and touristic value, enormous sporting significance, and plays an important role in promoting our territory and enhancing the great beauties of Lazio. The Liberazione also involves young people, which is fundamental for the human and physical growth of new generations.”
Cordiano Dagnoni (President FCI) - “I am honored to be in such a splendid location. I experienced the Liberazione as an athlete and thank the Terenzi group for bringing it back to the highest levels. The fact that there is great space for young people is important for the entire cycling movement. I can proudly announce today a great novelty: for the first time in Rome, an Academy will be established with top-level coaches to nurture new talents and to implement grassroots activities, an initiative that will be an important driver for new generations.”
Maria Spena (Board Member, Sport e Salute) - “Claudio Terenzi has always believed in this great project and has been a volcano of proposals and ideas. Sport e Salute believed in it and made itself available to help this event grow. Competition and solidarity are ingredients that blend perfectly and make the event one of great values. The Great Beauty of Rome will be enjoyed by participants and citizens who together will experience moments of great involvement in the most famous and appreciated historic places in the world.”
Claudio Terenzi (Organizer, Gran Premio Liberazione) - “A special thanks goes to Councillor Onorato, who is always present, very close to us, and is doing a lot for Rome and for sport. I am pleased to point out that the Liberazione races have been sold out for several months now, and even for the youth races we are almost at full capacity, proof of how the Liberazione is a beloved and well-known event worldwide. Allow me to say a few words about Bike4Fun, an event we care deeply about and which I believe will be exciting and see massive participation. It will be a way to be together, do sports together, but also an opportunity to express solidarity for those less fortunate.”
Marta Bastianelli, former world champion and winner of the GP Liberazione 2016 and 2017 - “I think thanks are due to all those who worked to set up this event. There is no April 25th without the Liberazione, an event that over the years has launched many young people who have gone on to achieve great things as professionals. I won it twice and can only wish all participants the best of luck, in whom I see myself.”
